2027 will be decided by performance – Lagos APC replies Aregbesola

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the 2027 general elections will be decided by performance and results, not by arguments or political polemics. The party was reacting to comments credited to former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, who claimed that governors’ defections would not determine the outcome of the 2027 elections.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oladejo Seye, the Lagos APC said Aregbesola’s remarks appeared to exaggerate the opposition’s outcome in the 2023 presidential election in Lagos. The party stressed that while everyone is entitled to their opinion, it was necessary to correct what it described as misleading conclusions and selective references to past elections.

The APC explained that presidential elections are decided at the national level, not by the result in a single state. According to the party, President Bola Tinubu won the 2023 election by building a broad national coalition, securing the required spread, and earning votes across different regions of the country. It added that focusing only on Lagos ignores the wider electoral reality.

The party further noted that the opposition’s win in Lagos during the presidential election was short-lived. It pointed out that Lagos voters later reaffirmed their support for the APC during the governorship election and subsequent bye-elections. The APC concluded that the 2023 Lagos result actually strengthened President Tinubu’s democratic image, showing that elections under his leadership were credible and transparent.
