AFCON: ‘He made it easy for them’ – Onyeka gives reasons Morocco defeated Nigeria

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s painful loss to Morocco in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, saying officiating decisions made it easier for the hosts to secure victory. According to him, the referee’s actions disrupted Nigeria’s rhythm at key moments of the match.

Onyeka, who played the full 120 minutes before being substituted ahead of the penalty shootout, said Morocco combined strong tactics with game management to frustrate Nigeria. He noted that Eric Chelle’s side struggled badly on the night, recording just two shots in the entire game, with only one on target, while Morocco dominated possession and chances.

Speaking to Oma Sports TV, the Brentford midfielder praised Morocco’s discipline but pointed to the role of the referee, Daniel Nii Laryea, in breaking Nigeria’s momentum. Onyeka explained that whenever Nigeria began to build pressure, stoppages and decisions went against them, allowing Morocco to regain control and dictate the pace of the game.

Despite the disappointment, Onyeka acknowledged Morocco’s strength and praised goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who saved crucial penalties. He added that Nigeria remain mentally and physically strong, especially against North African teams, stressing that the Super Eagles approach every opponent with confidence, regardless of region. Nigeria later bounced back by claiming the bronze medal after defeating Egypt on penalties.
