A massive fire outbreak has destroyed more than 300 houses in Wannue community, Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving about 95 households without shelter. The fire spread quickly through clusters of thatch houses and nearby structures, causing heavy losses to families in the area.
The inferno also consumed large quantities of farm produce and household items worth millions of naira. Items destroyed include yams, maize, melon, cassava chips, and other food supplies stored in homes and barns, worsening the situation for residents who depend mainly on farming for survival.
One of the victims, Mr Moses Answa Agule, said the fire started while he was away at the market. He explained that neighbours alerted him by phone, but before he could return, his thatch houses used as yam storage and all his food items had already been destroyed by the flames.
Affected residents have appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for urgent assistance. Although the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the incident has left many families stranded and in need of food, shelter, and basic support to rebuild their lives.
