The Ogun State Government has officially stopped the ongoing process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland. The decision was communicated in a letter from the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, to the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government. The government had earlier nullified the exercise and directed the Fusengbuwa ruling house to restart the process in accordance with existing laws.
The Commissioner explained that the decision followed multiple petitions and reports from security agencies and key stakeholders, citing concerns over public order and procedural irregularities. He emphasized that halting the selection is necessary to protect the integrity of the process and maintain the respect and veneration of the stool.
Part of the official communication noted that the action aligns with the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers the government to set aside appointments when it serves the interest of peace, order, and good governance. The Fusengbuwa ruling house has been directed to await further instructions regarding the selection process.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July after the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ruled for 65 years, passing away at the age of 91. The government stated that its intervention aims to ensure a smooth, transparent, and orderly selection of the next Awujale.
