The Sultan of Sokoto, the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, has announced that January 20, 2026, will mark the first day of Sha’aban 1447AH. The declaration was made following the sighting of the moon, which determines the start of the eighth month in the Islamic calendar.
The Sultan urged Muslims across the country to observe the beginning of Sha’aban with prayers and acts of worship. He emphasized the importance of this month as a period of spiritual preparation leading up to Ramadan.
Religious scholars and community leaders have welcomed the announcement, noting that it helps unify Muslim communities in Nigeria in observing fasting and religious rites during the upcoming months. The Sultan also called for peace, tolerance, and unity among citizens.
Muslims are encouraged to use Sha’aban to engage in charitable activities, self-reflection, and increased devotion, as it is traditionally a month for spiritual growth and preparation for Ramadan. The Sultan’s pronouncement is widely recognized across Nigeria as authoritative in Islamic matters.
