Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has described the attack on Pedro Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, as a clear attempt on his life. Falana made the statement during an interview, where he strongly condemned the incident and called it a serious criminal act.
According to Falana, Pedro Obaseki was attacked by an armed group while playing football in Benin City. He said the victim was forcefully taken away, assaulted, and treated in a degrading manner by the attackers, who reportedly fired shots into the air to scare people away from the scene.
Falana further criticized the actions of the police after the incident. He alleged that instead of arresting those responsible, the police held Pedro at the station without taking statements from the people who brought him in, raising serious concerns about due process and justice.
The senior lawyer stressed that Pedro’s fundamental rights were violated, including his right to life, dignity, and personal liberty. He added that legal steps would be taken to ensure accountability and to determine whether the attackers were legally permitted to carry firearms.
