Learn from Imam Abubakar’s life by preaching peace, tolerance, compassion – CAN tells religious leaders

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged religious leaders across the country to learn from the life and legacy of the late Imam Abubakar by promoting peace, tolerance, and compassion in their teachings. The association said the cleric’s example remains a powerful guide for building unity in a diverse society like Nigeria.

CAN noted that Imam Abubakar stood out as a voice of moderation who consistently encouraged peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths. According to the association, his actions and words showed that religion should be used to heal divisions, not deepen them.

The body encouraged Christian and Muslim leaders to use their platforms responsibly by discouraging hate, violence, and extremism. It stressed that sermons and public messages should focus on love, mutual respect, and understanding, especially at a time when the country is facing security and social challenges.

CAN added that honoring Imam Abubakar’s memory goes beyond words, calling on clerics to live out his values in their daily interactions. It said Nigeria would be more peaceful and united if religious leaders consistently preached compassion and tolerance, just as the late Imam did.
