AFCON 2025: Why Super Eagles lost to Morocco — Akanni

Former Super Eagles defender Waidi Akanni has shared his view on why Nigeria lost to Morocco in the semi-final of AFCON 2025. He said the team did not properly prepare for the possibility of a penalty shootout, which later became the deciding factor in the match.

The game between Nigeria and Morocco ended goalless after regular and extra time in Rabat. It was eventually decided by penalties, where Morocco converted more of their chances. The Atlas Lions scored four times, while Nigeria managed only two, leading to the Super Eagles’ elimination from the tournament.

Akanni explained that the Nigerian players seemed unready for the pressure of spot kicks. He noted that penalty shootouts require mental strength and practice, which the team appeared to lack on the night of the match. This, he said, gave Morocco a clear advantage during the shootout.

Despite the disappointment, Akanni urged Nigerians to support the team as they prepare for the third-place match against Egypt. He said the experience should serve as a lesson for future tournaments and help the Super Eagles improve their preparation for high-pressure moments.
