Lagos to introduce electric boats to ferry fleet to cut transport fares

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce electric-powered boats into its ferry transport system. The move is part of efforts to reduce transport fares, lower fuel costs, and provide cleaner and safer water transport for residents who rely on ferries daily.

Officials explained that electric boats will be cheaper to operate because they do not depend on petrol or diesel. This means operators can spend less on fuel and maintenance, making it possible to reduce ticket prices for passengers. The government also believes the boats will help reduce pollution on Lagos waterways.

Commuters have welcomed the idea, especially those who travel long distances by water every day. Many say high transport fares have become a burden, and any step that helps lower costs will make life easier for workers, students, and traders across the city.

The state government said pilot projects will begin soon, after which more electric boats will be added to the fleet. Authorities assured residents that safety standards will be strictly followed and that the new boats will be well tested before full deployment.
