The Nigeria Police have arrested 41 suspects during a major crackdown on illegal slaughter activities in parts of Benue State. The operation targeted several unapproved slaughter points, commonly referred to as “slaughterhouses,” following complaints about health risks, environmental pollution, and possible criminal activities linked to the locations.
According to the police, the exercise was aimed at enforcing public health regulations and restoring order in communities where the illegal slaughter sites had become a nuisance. Officers reportedly moved into different areas, shut down the unlicensed facilities, and took into custody individuals suspected to be operating or aiding the illegal activities.
The police explained that beyond hygiene concerns, some of the slaughter points were also being used as hideouts for criminal elements. This, they said, made the operation necessary to improve security and protect residents from possible harm. The suspects are currently undergoing screening and investigation to determine the level of their involvement.
Residents have welcomed the action, describing it as a step toward improving sanitation and safety in their communities. Many called on the authorities to sustain the enforcement so that the illegal slaughter sites do not reopen after the attention dies down.
