Catholic priest suspended over prolonged absence from parish in Benue

A Catholic priest in Benue State has been suspended from his duties due to an extended absence from his assigned parish. Church authorities confirmed that the suspension follows repeated warnings and attempts to resolve the matter amicably.

Parishioners reportedly raised concerns after noticing the priest had been away for several months without official communication. The absence disrupted regular church activities, including masses, sacraments, and pastoral programs.

The Diocese emphasized that priests are expected to maintain consistent engagement with their communities and uphold their pastoral responsibilities. The suspension, officials said, is a measure to enforce accountability within the church.

Local church leaders have appealed for calm among parish members, urging them to continue attending services while arrangements are made for temporary clergy to handle pastoral duties. The diocese also stated that the priest will have the opportunity to respond to the suspension before a final decision is made.
