Teachers’ promotion: Otti orders ASUBEB to restore 60% pass mark

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has instructed the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) to restore the 60 per cent pass mark for teachers seeking promotion. The directive follows complaints from teachers who were unhappy with recent changes to the promotion process.

Governor Otti said the 60 per cent benchmark is fair and helps maintain quality in the education system. He explained that teachers should be encouraged and assessed properly, not discouraged by policies that appear too harsh or unclear.

The governor also asked ASUBEB to ensure that future promotion exercises are transparent and well-communicated to teachers across the state. According to him, a motivated teaching workforce is important for improving learning outcomes in public schools.

Many teachers welcomed the governor’s intervention, describing it as timely and supportive. Education stakeholders believe the move will boost morale and restore confidence in the promotion system while keeping standards high.
