An economic analyst has raised concerns over what he described as the National Assembly’s unusually fast approval of executive requests related to the 2026 budget. According to him, the speed at which the legislature is giving consent to proposals from the Presidency raises questions about the level of scrutiny being applied to key financial decisions.
The analyst said that while cooperation between the executive and legislature is important for governance, the National Assembly is also expected to perform its oversight role thoroughly. He warned that rushing approvals could lead to weak budget planning, wasteful spending, or policies that may not fully address the country’s economic challenges.
He further explained that budgets should be carefully debated to reflect national priorities such as inflation control, job creation, infrastructure development, and social welfare. Without proper review, he said, there is a risk that public funds may be misdirected or poorly managed.
The analyst therefore urged lawmakers to strike a balance between speed and diligence, stressing that Nigerians deserve a transparent and well-examined budget process. He added that detailed legislative scrutiny would help ensure that the 2026 budget truly serves the interests of the citizens.
