The United States Ambassador has explained the reasons behind the recent visa restrictions affecting Nigerians, saying the measures are not meant to punish ordinary citizens. According to the envoy, the policy is part of broader immigration controls aimed at protecting national security and ensuring compliance with visa rules.
The ambassador noted that key concerns include visa overstays, document irregularities, and the need for stronger identity verification. He stressed that these issues are not unique to Nigeria, as similar restrictions apply to other countries facing comparable challenges. The US government, he said, regularly reviews its visa policies based on data and security assessments.
Despite the restrictions, the envoy assured Nigerians that legitimate travel for education, business, healthcare, and tourism remains possible. He encouraged applicants to provide accurate information, respect visa conditions, and use official channels when applying. He also highlighted ongoing cooperation between the US and Nigerian authorities to address the concerns raised.
The ambassador concluded by reaffirming the strong diplomatic and people-to-people ties between both countries. He expressed hope that improved compliance and collaboration would lead to a review of the restrictions in the future, adding that the US values its long-standing relationship with Nigeria.
