Former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has named Brazil as the leading favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the legendary coach, the South American giants have the quality, depth, and experience needed to lift the trophy once again on football’s biggest stage.
Ferguson believes Brazil’s chances have been boosted by the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as head coach. He noted that the Italian manager’s experience at top clubs gives Brazil a strong tactical edge. The former United boss said Brazil always arrive at World Cups with talented players capable of deciding games at crucial moments.
However, Ferguson also pointed to Portugal as a serious threat. He explained that Portugal have many quality players and could be the team that stops Brazil on their way to the title. In his view, any country able to knock out Brazil would likely go on to win the tournament.
Reflecting on his time at Manchester United, Ferguson recalled working with Brazilian twins Rafael and Fabio, saying Brazil’s football culture consistently produces top talents. While Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ferguson believes the 2026 edition could see Brazil reclaim global dominance—unless Portugal rise to the challenge.
