Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has explained the reason behind his recent visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in Sokoto prison. The governor said the visit was not politically motivated but aimed at promoting dialogue and peace. He made this clarification while receiving members of the Abia Diaspora Commission and the medical team of the state’s Global Medical Mission 2025 at the Government House in Umuahia.
Otti’s explanation followed reactions to a viral video on social media in which a critic questioned his decision to visit Kanu. Addressing the criticism, the governor said differing opinions are normal in a democratic society and should not be seen as an attack. He stressed that his action was guided by the belief that constructive engagement remains a key step toward resolving lingering tensions.
The governor further dismissed claims that the visit was linked to any future political ambition. According to him, his focus remains on governance and the wellbeing of Abia residents, not personal political gain. He reiterated that his visit was purely humanitarian and peace-driven, noting that dialogue is often necessary in addressing sensitive national issues.
Otti also revealed that he has no plans to seek any elective office after completing his tenure as governor. He stated clearly that once his time in office ends, he intends to retire fully from public service, urging the public to judge his actions based on facts rather than speculation.
