Islamic groups caution Muslim leaders against meddling in tax reform matters

Several Islamic groups in Nigeria have cautioned Muslim leaders against intervening in matters related to the country’s new tax reform. The groups emphasized that religious leaders should focus on spiritual guidance rather than political and fiscal issues.

The organisations noted that involvement in tax policies could compromise the neutrality of religious institutions and distract leaders from their primary role in guiding their communities. They warned that meddling in governmental fiscal matters might create unnecessary controversies.

Islamic groups urged Muslim leaders to encourage their followers to comply with the law, including paying taxes, while leaving policy debates to legislators and experts. They stressed that constructive engagement should be limited to educating the public on the importance of tax compliance.

According to the groups, separating religious leadership from government fiscal matters helps maintain societal harmony and ensures that religious institutions remain trusted moral authorities. They called on leaders to uphold these boundaries to avoid political entanglements.
