The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly criticised the title of a new Nollywood movie, A Very Dirty Christmas, describing it as offensive and inappropriate. The group said the title sends a wrong message, especially during a season Christians consider sacred and symbolic.
CAN expressed concern that linking Christmas with words they see as negative could undermine the values of the celebration. The association warned that such titles may confuse young people and weaken the moral meaning of Christmas, which centres on peace, purity, and goodwill.
The Christian body also directed its caution to popular actress Ini Edo, who is reportedly associated with the movie. CAN urged her and other filmmakers to be more sensitive to religious beliefs when naming and promoting films, noting that Nollywood has wide influence across Nigerian society.
While acknowledging creative freedom in the movie industry, CAN stressed that freedom should come with responsibility. The association called on producers to consider public reaction and cultural values, adding that respect for faith and tradition helps maintain harmony in a diverse country like Nigeria.
