Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, has revealed why former President Muhammadu Buhari did not publicly name his preferred successor during his tenure. Bichi explained that Buhari wanted to maintain neutrality and ensure a fair electoral process.
According to Bichi, Buhari believed that announcing a successor could create divisions within the ruling party and among Nigerians. He emphasized that the former president aimed to leave the choice of leadership to the democratic process rather than personal endorsement.
Bichi also stated that Buhari’s approach was intended to strengthen democracy in Nigeria by allowing party structures and the electorate to determine the next leader without undue influence. This decision, he added, reflected Buhari’s commitment to democratic norms.
Political analysts have noted that while some critics saw Buhari’s silence as indecisive, others appreciate his efforts to prevent political tension and maintain unity within his party. The debate over succession continues to be a key topic in Nigerian politics.
