A court in Kebbi State has sentenced a man to five years in prison for attempting to rape a young girl. The judgment followed the conclusion of the trial, where the court found the accused guilty based on evidence presented by the prosecution.
During the hearing, the court heard how the man attempted to force himself on the minor before help arrived and the act was stopped. The judge described the offence as serious and harmful, especially because it involved a child who needed protection, not abuse.
The court stressed that crimes against children would not be treated lightly, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law. It added that the sentence was meant to serve as punishment and also discourage others from committing similar crimes.
Residents and rights advocates have welcomed the judgment, saying it sends a strong message that sexual violence will not be tolerated. They also called for parents, communities, and authorities to work together to protect children and report abuse early.
