Chidimma Adetshina Withdraws from Miss South Africa Pageant Amid Nationality Controversy

Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant in the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant, has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the competition due to an ongoing controversy surrounding her nationality. The 23-year-old model, who was born in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian father and Mozambican mother, was one of the top 10 finalists poised to compete in the grand finale on August 10, 2024, in Pretoria. The winner of this event would represent South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant later this year in Mexico.

Background of the Controversy

Chidimma’s journey in the pageant had been marked by excitement and anticipation until recent allegations concerning her nationality surfaced. Questions were raised about her eligibility to compete in Miss South Africa, with critics questioning whether she met the necessary requirements for participation.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in South Africa launched an investigation to scrutinize the validity of these concerns. The investigation uncovered preliminary evidence suggesting that Chidimma’s mother may have been involved in fraudulent activities, including identity theft, dating back to 2001. At the time of these alleged activities, Chidimma was still a minor and, as the DHA confirmed, had no involvement in or knowledge of her mother’s actions.

Chidimma’s Decision to Withdraw

Amid growing media attention and public scrutiny, Chidimma took to Instagram on Thursday to announce her withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant. In her heartfelt post, she emphasized that her decision was made to ensure the safety and well-being of her family. Chidimma expressed gratitude to her supporters and the Miss South Africa organization but made it clear that the situation had become too overwhelming for her to continue in the competition.

“My journey in the Miss South Africa pageant has been an incredible experience,” Chidimma wrote. “However, in light of recent events and for the safety of my family and I, I have decided to withdraw from the competition. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout this process.”

The Impact on Miss South Africa 2024

Chidimma’s withdrawal has undoubtedly impacted the dynamics of this year’s Miss South Africa pageant. As one of the top 10 finalists, she was a strong contender for the crown, and her departure leaves a noticeable gap in the competition. The Miss South Africa organization has yet to comment on whether a replacement will be named or if the competition will proceed with only nine finalists.

She wrote,

“I would like to start off by thanking everyone beside me right from the start of my Miss South Africa journey. I’m really grateful for all the love and support I’ve been shown,”

“Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an amazing journey, however after much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I.

“With the support of the Miss South Africa organisation, I leave with a heart full of gratitude for this amazing experience.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow finalists all the best for the remainder of the competition. Whoever represents us wears the crown for all.”

The controversy surrounding Chidimma also raises broader questions about the criteria and processes used to vet contestants in national pageants. While Miss South Africa has a history of promoting diversity and inclusivity, this incident has highlighted the challenges that can arise when issues of nationality and identity come into play.
