A respected cleric has shared new insights into why many Nigerian politicians frequently visit well-known General Overseers before major political decisions. According to him, these visits are not always about seeking endorsements but often about finding spiritual reassurance during uncertain times. He explained that politicians believe spiritual leaders can offer guidance, prayers and a sense of protection.
The cleric noted that some politicians also visit popular pastors to gain public trust. Since many Nigerians hold strong religious beliefs, associating with influential spiritual figures can help boost a politician’s image. This, he said, makes voters feel the politician is morally grounded or divinely supported.
He further added that some politicians go to these General Overseers to seek wisdom on leadership challenges. Many of these pastors have large followings and years of experience dealing with people, making them a source of counsel on issues around governance, pressure and personal struggles.
The cleric warned, however, that political leaders should not misuse these visits for propaganda. He urged politicians to focus on genuine service rather than spiritual showmanship. He also advised religious leaders to remain neutral and avoid becoming tools in political battles.
