Kanu is our Crown Prince, not a terrorist – Umuahia traditional rulers fault judgment

Traditional rulers in Umuahia have condemned the life sentence handed to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing him as their “Crown Prince” rather than a terrorist. The rulers expressed disappointment over the Federal High Court’s ruling, calling it unjust and a misrepresentation of Kanu’s role in the community.

The leaders stated that Kanu has always been committed to advocating for the rights of his people peacefully and that the court’s judgment undermines local traditions and respect for their community leaders. They also highlighted his influence and leadership within Umuahia, emphasizing that he is seen as a legitimate traditional figure.

According to the traditional rulers, the judgment could fuel tensions in the region, and they called for a review of the case to ensure fairness and justice. They stressed the importance of dialogue over punitive measures to address political and social grievances.

The statement concludes with a plea for authorities to recognize Kanu’s position in the community and to distinguish between activism and terrorism, urging a more balanced approach to justice in Nigeria.
