Cross River: Insecurity forces Gov Otu to cancel marathon race

Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has announced the cancellation of the state’s annual marathon due to rising insecurity concerns. The governor explained that the decision was made to prioritize the safety of participants, spectators, and residents in the host communities. The marathon, which usually attracts both local and international athletes, will not hold this year as a precautionary measure.

Governor Otu emphasized that the state government is committed to ensuring the security of all public events and that the cancellation was necessary given current threats. He reassured residents that alternative measures will be explored to promote sports and fitness safely in the state.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Cross River, which has affected social and economic activities. Organizers of the marathon had previously expressed optimism about the event but acknowledged that public safety must come first.

While disappointed, athletes and stakeholders have supported the governor’s move, highlighting that safety is more important than the continuation of the event. The government also promised to work closely with security agencies to create conditions that would allow future sporting events to proceed without risk.
