The Chief of Staff to the Kebbi State Governor has called on the National Assembly (NASS) to formally recognize the media as the fourth arm of government. He emphasized that the press plays a crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and democracy in Nigeria.
Speaking at a recent public forum, he noted that the media’s role in informing the public and checking government excesses is as important as the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government.
He also urged lawmakers to consider creating policies that strengthen press freedom and protect journalists from harassment and intimidation. According to him, a free and responsible media is essential for good governance and national development.
Several participants at the forum agreed, stating that recognizing the media’s importance would improve public trust in government and ensure citizens are well-informed about national issues.
The Chief of Staff concluded that the media should not just report events but actively contribute to shaping policies that serve the public interest, advocating for a collaborative relationship between the government and the press.
