The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended his confrontation with Naval officer Lieutenant A.M. Yerima over a disputed land plot allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (retd). Wike criticized the use of military personnel to obstruct lawful activities by FCT officials.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the FCT Executive Council meeting, Wike highlighted his approach to resolving land disputes involving prominent Nigerians. He recalled how former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Army Chief T.Y. Danjuma sought his assistance in resolving land issues without involving security personnel.
“Many influential Nigerians have had similar land disputes. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo would call me directly, and I would resolve it. General T.Y. Danjuma also did the same. They never sent soldiers to attack anybody; they simply called,” Wike stated.
The minister further criticized Lieutenant Yerima for allegedly insulting police officers on site, referring to them as “bloody police.” Wike emphasized that government officials present were responsible for the officer’s rank and urged respect for law enforcement personnel.
“How can I sit as a minister when government officials at the level of directors are being attacked? You say you’re a commissioned officer, but it is these same government officials you’re beating, the ones who made you what you are,” he added.
