The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its former University of Uyo chapter chairman indefinitely after he dragged the association to court. The decision, announced by NMA leadership, stated that taking internal matters to the judiciary without exhausting internal dispute channels violated the association’s rules and code of conduct.
According to the NMA, the suspended member bypassed established conflict-resolution procedures and acted against the collective interest of the medical body. The association stressed that issues among members should be handled through dialogue and internal mechanisms, not litigation.
NMA leaders also noted that the move to suspend him was aimed at promoting discipline and safeguarding the unity of the medical community. They emphasized that professional associations must maintain internal order to function effectively and protect the welfare of members and the health sector.
Reacting to the development, some members said the decision should serve as a lesson to others to respect organisational processes. They noted that internal disagreements are normal but should not escalate to actions that could threaten the association’s credibility.
The suspended former chairman has not publicly responded to the sanction. Meanwhile, the NMA urged members to remain focused on their duties and continue to uphold the ethics and values of the medical profession.
