Zambia frowns at rituals, occultism themes in Nollywood movies

The government of Zambia has expressed concern over the increasing presence of rituals, occult practices, and magic themes in some Nollywood movies. According to media authorities in the country, many Nigerian films promote spiritual practices and lifestyles that are against Zambia’s cultural and moral values. They warned that such movie content could influence young viewers negatively and encourage wrong beliefs.

Officials explained that Zambia respects the Nigerian film industry for its global success but believes certain content needs to be reviewed. They argued that entertainment should not glorify harmful spiritual practices or rituals. They also encouraged filmmakers to highlight positive African culture instead of focusing on scenes involving charms, sacrifices, and witchcraft.

In addition, the Zambian government cautioned local broadcasters to be more selective in the films they air. They advised TV stations to avoid disturbing spiritual scenes and ensure content supports moral development. Media regulators said they will continue monitoring imported movies to protect the public from misleading or dangerous cultural narratives.

Meanwhile, some Nigerians have reacted, saying Nollywood simply reflects African stories and traditional beliefs that have existed for generations. However, others agree that excessive focus on ritual and magic content can damage the industry’s international image and discourage family-friendly storytelling.

As conversations continue, both Nigerians and Zambians hope for a healthy balance — where filmmakers are free to be creative but still promote values that uplift society. Industry analysts say collaboration between African film industries can help improve standards and content quality across the continent.
