The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Amupitan, has vowed to conduct elections so transparent and credible that aspirants will have no reason to challenge the results in court. Speaking during a recent public address, Amupitan stressed that his mission is to build a system that earns public trust and ensures fairness for all candidates and voters. According to him, Nigeria must move away from election controversies and focus on genuine democratic progress.
Amupitan said his goal is to make elections so clean and professionally managed that the outcome will be widely accepted. He noted that trust in the electoral process is vital for peace and stability, and promised that INEC under his watch will set new standards in transparency and accountability. The INEC boss explained that his leadership will adopt stricter adherence to electoral laws, investment in technology, and improved training for election officials.
He emphasized that the continuous trend of post-election lawsuits damages Nigeria’s democratic image and wastes national resources. Amupitan stated that when elections are credible, candidates should be able to respect the will of the people instead of relying on the courts to settle disputes. He added that political parties must also discipline their candidates and encourage full compliance with election rules.
The INEC chairman also called for cooperation from political parties, security agencies, and voters. He noted that credible elections require joint efforts, not just the work of the electoral commission alone. Amupitan urged all stakeholders to support reforms and contribute to a peaceful and credible democratic process, stressing that election integrity is a shared responsibility.
He assured Nigerians that future elections will reflect the true voice of the people. Amupitan ended his statement by promising continuous improvements in election management and assuring citizens that INEC is ready to uphold democracy with dignity, fairness, and reliability.
