Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former special adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called on the President to break his silence and address Nigerians over the recent strong diplomatic stance taken by the United States. Baba-Ahmed said the situation demands clear leadership and direct communication to reassure citizens and outline Nigeria’s strategy. According to him, this is not a time for government officials to speak on behalf of the President — Tinubu must address the nation himself.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page, Baba-Ahmed stressed that silence from the Presidency portrays Nigeria as weak on the global stage. He warned that without a firm response, the country risks appearing unprepared and lacking direction during a critical international moment. Baba-Ahmed emphasized that strong leadership requires transparency and vocal defense of national interests.
He also criticized reports suggesting that President Tinubu may travel to the U.S. to meet former American President Donald Trump. Baba-Ahmed said such a visit would send the wrong message and weaken Nigeria’s image even further. He described it as responding to diplomatic pressure with submission, instead of standing firm and asserting Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Baba-Ahmed further raised concerns about Nigeria still operating without appointed ambassadors more than a year into Tinubu’s administration. He argued that the absence of ambassadors limits the country’s diplomatic capacity and restricts global engagement. According to him, failing to send official representatives abroad leaves Nigeria nearly invisible in international affairs at a time when strong diplomacy is greatly needed.
He concluded by urging President Tinubu to act swiftly: address the nation, restore diplomatic presence by appointing ambassadors, and give Nigerians confidence in the government’s plans. Baba-Ahmed said true leadership means listening to the people, speaking to them, and protecting the nation’s interests with clarity and strength.
