A tragic road accident at Ekoro Junction heading toward Ile-Iwe in Lagos State on Wednesday led to the death of a tricycle rider, while two other people suffered serious injuries. The crash involved a loaded trailer and three other vehicles, including a tricycle, a Honda Pilot, and a Toyota Camry. The tricycle rider reportedly died on the spot during the impact.
According to officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident happened after a six-tyre trailer carrying goods experienced a sudden brake failure. The driver lost control, causing the trailer to crush the tricycle completely before ramming into other vehicles. Witnesses said the trailer even crossed the road median and damaged property on the opposite side.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq confirmed that officers responded quickly and worked with other emergency agencies to rescue trapped victims. The two injured people were rushed to Ile-Epo General Hospital, while the deceased tricycle operator’s remains were taken away for official procedures. Security operatives cordoned off the scene to avoid further accidents and directed traffic through alternative routes, including Iyana-Meran and Ajasa Command.
In a statement, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the accident as heartbreaking and avoidable. He blamed mechanical negligence and overspeeding by trailer drivers for many similar accidents across Lagos. He noted that heavy-duty vehicles must be properly checked before going on the road to prevent more lives from being lost unnecessarily.
Authorities urged truck operators to always service their vehicles, especially their braking systems, and obey speed limits on busy roads. They also expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased tricycle rider and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims. The damaged vehicles were towed to the police station as investigations continue.
