CAF announces expansion of WAFCON to 16 teams

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will now feature 16 teams instead of 12. This new format aims to support the rapid growth of women’s football across the continent and give more nations the chance to compete on the big stage.

CAF explained that expanding the tournament will help strengthen competition, develop young female players and increase the visibility of women’s football in Africa. The decision also aligns with global trends as more countries invest in women’s sports.

With the expansion, more teams will now participate in qualifiers, creating fresh opportunities for emerging football nations. Supporters and analysts believe the move will boost the quality of the game, attract more talent, and increase commercial interest in African women’s football.

Fans across the continent are excited for a more competitive and inclusive WAFCON tournament when the new format officially kicks off.
