Traders in Otukpo, Benue State, on Tuesday shut down the main market to protest the increasing cases of car theft in the area.
The traders said vehicles have been stolen repeatedly from the market environment, yet no major action has been taken to address the situation.
According to them, the latest incident involved a trader whose car was stolen in broad daylight, causing fear among business owners and customers. To show their frustration and demand stronger security, they closed the market and gathered to call for intervention from authorities.
Some traders complained that the situation has made doing business risky, as many now fear bringing their cars to the market. They urged security agencies and local leaders to act fast and restore confidence.
The protesters warned that they will continue to shut the market if the theft cases are not tackled and suspects are not arrested.
