The Member representing Bwari/AMAC Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obika Chinedu, has called for the abolition of constituency projects, arguing that they have distracted lawmakers from their main duty — lawmaking. Speaking in an interview with DAILY POST, the Labour Party lawmaker said constituency projects have done “great harm” to the legislative arm of government.
According to him, legislators are now more focused on executing community projects rather than making laws that will improve the lives of Nigerians. “The greatest harm done to the legislature is this thing called constituency project. It has turned lawmakers into executives,” he lamented. Chinedu explained that legislators should only supervise projects and not be directly involved in their execution. He said this shift in focus has made Nigerians mistake lawmakers for members of the executive arm.
The lawmaker further revealed that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has a record budget of N1.8 trillion for infrastructural projects in 2025, insisting that lawmakers should not be competing to “attract boreholes and roads” when such funds already exist. “We supported and passed the law to ensure accelerated development. But we are not supposed to be doing the job of the executive,” he stated.
Speaking on the state of insecurity in the FCT, Chinedu said security operatives are “trying their best” despite limited resources. He, however, called for the creation of an FCT Independent Police Force, which he believes will enhance safety and allow the territory to invest part of its internally generated revenue in security infrastructure.
On party politics, Hon. Chinedu reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party, despite recent defections by some opposition figures to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “I am a Labour Party man and will remain so until our leader says otherwise. People have the right to choose their political path; that’s why we have a multiparty system,” he said.
