NUJ calls for implementation of workers’ promotion exercise in Abia

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, has called on the Abia State Government to ensure the full implementation of the recently approved 2024–2025 promotion exercise for civil servants. The union commended Governor Alex Otti for approving the process but expressed concern that the last promotion exercise has yet to reflect in workers’ salaries.

In a communiqué issued after its October Congress and signed by Chairman Chidi Asonye and Secretary Iyke Onuegbu, the NUJ lamented that many civil servants who were promoted and issued with Gen. 35 letters are still receiving salaries based on their former grades. The union emphasized that implementing promotions motivates workers and boosts productivity in the public sector.

The NUJ also lauded the governor’s approval of ₦50 million for clearing salary arrears owed to deceased workers spanning over 16 years. It further appealed to the government to keep its promise on the payment of gratuities to pensioners, noting that many retirees are still awaiting their entitlements.

The communiqué additionally urged the state government to address the growing complaints over electricity billing and metering by compelling the power distribution company to ensure fairness and transparency in its operations. The union said proper regulation would ease the burden on residents already facing tough economic conditions.

Furthermore, the journalists called on the government to investigate the causes of recent building collapses in the state, especially the three-storey building in Umuahia. They urged that the findings be made public to prevent future occurrences and safeguard lives and property.
