New army commander takes over at 22 Armoured Brigade in Kwara

The Nigerian Army has announced a change in leadership at the 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, following the latest postings and appointments of senior officers across the force. Brigadier General Nicholas Nemetne Rume officially assumed duty as the 23rd Commander of the brigade on October 22, 2025, during a formal handing-over ceremony held at the brigade headquarters in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The event marked the transfer of leadership from Brigadier General Ezra Bawa Barkins, the outgoing commander, to General Rume. Speaking at the ceremony, General Barkins expressed his gratitude to God and the Chief of Army Staff for the privilege of serving as the brigade’s commander. He also commended the officers and soldiers for their discipline, loyalty, and professionalism throughout his tenure.

Barkins urged troops to extend the same spirit of commitment and support to the new commander to ensure continued success in the brigade’s operations and security responsibilities. He described the handover as a seamless transition aimed at strengthening the army’s operational efficiency.

The ceremony included the signing of handover notes, a farewell address by the outgoing commander, and the presentation of the command flag to Brigadier General Rume. The symbolic hoisting of the new brigade flag at the Quarter Guard also took place, signifying the start of a new chapter in the brigade’s leadership.

According to a statement issued by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the 22 Armoured Brigade remains committed to upholding national security, discipline, and professionalism under its new leadership.
