The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, has ordered the redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ushafa Division following the circulation of a viral video showing the officer slapping a young man during an arrest.
The incident, which went viral on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, sparked outrage among Nigerians who described the officer’s actions as a blatant abuse of power and unprofessional conduct. In response, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, released a statement on Wednesday condemning the act.
According to Adeh, the Commissioner of Police viewed the behaviour as “unacceptable and inconsistent with the values and ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.” She confirmed that the officer has been redeployed to the command headquarters while an internal investigation is being conducted to determine appropriate disciplinary action.
CP Dantawaye also used the opportunity to remind all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and their subordinates to uphold professionalism, civility, and respect for human rights while performing their duties. He warned that any breach of conduct would attract strict sanctions.
The FCT Police Command further appealed to residents to maintain mutual respect and cooperation with security personnel to ensure peace and effective community policing. Members of the public were also encouraged to report any form of police misconduct through the command’s official communication channels.
