Defection: Gov Diri should be removed from office – Ex-PDP National Legal Adviser

Former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jacob Mark, has called for the removal of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State from office following his resignation from the opposition party.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, Mark argued that Governor Diri’s exit from the PDP was unconstitutional and should automatically disqualify him from holding an elective position.

The legal expert stated that the Nigerian Constitution clearly prohibits anyone from occupying an elective office without being sponsored by a political party. According to him, once a politician resigns from the party that brought him into office, he loses the legal backing to continue in that position.

He said, “The constitution of Nigeria clearly states that you cannot contest elections without being sponsored by a political party. By implication, you also cannot occupy an elective office without belonging to a political party.”

Mark further lamented that politicians have become too powerful, describing them as “warlords” who act as though they are above their parties. His statement follows the recent defections of Governor Diri and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
