Popular Nigerian singer, John Mai Molo drops dead after eating ‘poisoned’ meal

Popular traditional singer, John Zuya, famously known as John Mai Molo, has been confirmed dead after allegedly consuming a poisoned meal in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

According to reports, the Bauchi-born musician returned from Lagos on October 16, 2025, after performing at several cultural events. Shortly after his arrival, he reportedly ate a meal that left him feeling unwell. Moments later, he collapsed and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi, where doctors confirmed his death.

A close friend and fellow artist, Emma Wakili, broke the sad news in a Facebook post, revealing that John Mai Molo passed away around 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025. His death has since thrown the music community and his fans into mourning.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the true cause of death. The singer’s remains have been deposited at the ATBUTH mortuary for autopsy as part of ongoing inquiries.

John Mai Molo was celebrated for his contributions to traditional music and cultural promotion in Northern Nigeria. His sudden passing has been described as a major loss to the Nigerian music scene, especially among lovers of Hausa folk sounds.
