A tragic accident occurred on Thursday in Ikeja, Lagos, when a moving train crushed a dispatch rider to death at the PWD Railway Level Crossing. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident happened after the rider ignored warning signals and attempted to cross the tracks despite the oncoming train.
In a statement released by LASTMA, the motorcycle, registered as AGL 179 QR, was hit near the route leading to Ikeja GRA, resulting in the rider’s instant death. Eyewitnesses said the victim tried to speed past the train, disregarding both the signals and the barriers meant to protect motorists. “He rode in a hurry and ignored the warnings,” an eyewitness recounted.
LASTMA officials quickly arrived at the scene to control traffic and secure the area. They were later joined by officers from the Shogunle Police Division and personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), who removed the victim’s body from the tracks.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the victim’s family. He described the crash as a painful reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and impatience on Lagos roads. Bakare-Oki urged dispatch riders and motorists to respect warning signs, traffic lights, and barriers, particularly at railway crossings.
He also reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to enhancing road safety awareness and strengthening enforcement across the state. “We remain steadfast in our mission to promote discipline, proactive enforcement, and continuous public enlightenment to ensure safety on Lagos roads,” Bakare-Oki stated.
