2027: Treat election riggers as terrorists – Aisha Yesufu

Prominent activist and co-founder of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, Aisha Yesufu, has called for severe punishment for anyone involved in election rigging in Nigeria. She argued that those who manipulate elections should be treated as terrorists, as their actions destroy democracy and endanger national stability.

Yesufu made the statement in a post on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, while reacting to remarks made by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State. The governor had earlier warned that anyone planning to rig the 2027 elections should “write their will,” emphasizing that electoral malpractice would no longer be tolerated under his watch.

Backing Otti’s stance, Aisha Yesufu stated that Nigerians must adopt a no-nonsense attitude toward election offenders. “You see that thing Alex Otti said — that anybody planning to rig elections should first write their will — that’s the mentality Nigerians should have! I have repeatedly said anyone that rigs election should be treated as a terrorist,” she wrote.

The activist, known for her fearless advocacy on governance and citizens’ rights, explained that election rigging is a form of political violence, as it robs citizens of their voices and leads to bad leadership, corruption, and insecurity. She urged Nigerians to hold politicians accountable and resist any attempt to subvert the will of the people.

Her comment has sparked wide reactions across social media, with many Nigerians supporting her call for tougher electoral laws. Others stressed the need for the government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the 2027 general elections are transparent, credible, and fair.
