Nnamdi Kanu’s ailment not life-threatening, he’s fit to stand trial – NMA Panel

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) panel assigned to evaluate Nnamdi Kanu’s health has declared that the ailment of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is not life-threatening. The report confirmed that Kanu is medically fit to continue his ongoing terrorism trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The medical assessment was ordered by Justice James Omotosho following conflicting medical reports presented by both the prosecution and defence teams. The NMA panel, after thorough examination, submitted its findings to the court on October 13, confirming that Kanu’s condition does not prevent him from participating in the trial.

During Thursday’s proceedings, the prosecution led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) presented the report, which was partly read in open court. Based on the findings and the absence of objections from either party, Justice Omotosho ruled that the trial should proceed as planned. The judge fixed October 23 as the start date for Kanu to open and close his defence within six consecutive days.

Meanwhile, the court granted an oral application from Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), requesting a private consultation session between the defendant and his legal team. The defence had expressed concern that their discussions within the Department of State Services (DSS) facility might be monitored or recorded. The judge approved that the meeting be held in the courtroom on October 22, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, with only Kanu and his lawyers present.

The court’s directive paves the way for the long-awaited defence phase of the trial, which has faced multiple delays due to health and procedural issues. With the confirmation of his fitness, Nnamdi Kanu is now set to continue his legal battle as the case resumes later this month.
