Spanish club Atletico Madrid has announced the appointment of Mateu Alemany as the new director of men’s professional football. Alemany, who previously worked at Barcelona, officially assumed his new role on Tuesday, beginning his duties with a visit to the first team and a meeting with coach Diego Simeone.
Alemany, aged 62, played a key role in rebuilding Barcelona’s squad and guiding them to La Liga victory in 2023 under president Joan Laporta. During his time at the club, he was instrumental in executing the “financial levers” strategy that enabled Barca to sign players like Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Jules Kounde in 2022.
A respected football executive and skilled negotiator, Alemany helped stabilize Barcelona’s finances and successfully cut down their wage bill before his departure in 2023. At Atletico, he will work alongside Carlos Bucero, the club’s general director of football, who also manages the B team and youth academy.
Atletico Madrid currently sits fifth in La Liga, eight points behind leaders Real Madrid, despite securing a remarkable 5–2 win over their city rivals in a recent derby. The club hopes Alemany’s experience and management skills will help strengthen their performance both on and off the pitch.
