Man arrested for vandalising high-tension cables in FCT

Police operatives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested a man for vandalising high-tension electricity cables in one of the city’s suburbs.

The suspect, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was reportedly caught in the act by security personnel during a routine patrol. According to authorities, the man had already cut a significant portion of the power cables before he was apprehended.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect attempted to flee but was quickly overpowered and handed over to the police. Preliminary investigations revealed that the cables were targeted for resale as scrap metal — a crime that has been on the rise in the FCT in recent months.

Police spokesperson in the FCT assured residents that the suspect will face prosecution, adding that efforts are ongoing to track other members of the vandalism network. The statement also urged community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements around public facilities.

The incident underscores the growing concern over infrastructure sabotage in Abuja and its surrounding areas, which has led to frequent power disruptions and huge financial losses.
