The Oba of Benin has voiced his displeasure over the recent appointment of President Tinubu’s daughter, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, as Iyaloja-General, describing the title as alien to Benin tradition. The monarch emphasized that the Benin Kingdom has its own unique titles and cultural structures, which should not be mixed with traditions from other parts of Nigeria.

He explained that imposing such titles in Benin could distort centuries-old customs and undermine the identity of the Edo people. The Oba stressed that every ethnic group in Nigeria must protect and respect its cultural heritage, rather than adopting titles that are foreign to its tradition.

The remarks have sparked conversations nationwide, with many backing the monarch’s stance, while others argue that such positions can foster unity among different regions. Nonetheless, the Oba of Benin made it clear that in his kingdom, cultural purity and respect for tradition must remain non-negotiable.
