Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has called on Nigerians to push for true federalism and fair electoral processes as the country marks its 65th Independence Anniversary. Speaking during the celebrations, he stressed that Nigeria’s progress depends on restructuring governance to give more power and responsibility to states.
El-Rufai noted that while Nigeria has made some progress since independence, challenges like insecurity, poor infrastructure, and electoral malpractice remain stumbling blocks. He emphasized that a truly federal system would allow states to thrive according to their resources and strengths, while credible elections would restore citizens’ confidence in democracy.
The former governor urged leaders and citizens alike to embrace unity, accountability, and fairness. According to him, only by adopting these values can Nigeria achieve the greatness envisioned by its founding fathers and overcome the divisions that have slowed down development.
