BREAKING: DSS slams cybercrime charges against Sowore, others over anti-Tinubu post

The Department of State Services (DSS) has taken activist Omoyele Sowore and two others to court, accusing them of making false posts about President Bola Tinubu. The DSS says the comments were meant to cause unrest in the country.

The charges, which were filed on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, also listed X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) as defendants. According to the case file marked FHC/ABJ/CR/481/2025, Sowore allegedly used his X account, @YeleSowore, on August 25 to claim that Tinubu lied during a trip to Brazil about ending corruption in Nigeria.

The DSS also said Sowore repeated the same statement on his Facebook page the next day, August 26. They believe these posts were shared to stir conflict among Nigerians with different political views.

In the five-count charge, Sowore was accused of breaking the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024 as well as Section 375 and Section 59 of the Criminal Code. The DSS claimed his posts were defamatory, false, and aimed at creating fear and disorder in the country.

The charges were signed by Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation. However, the court has not yet fixed a date for Sowore’s arraignment. The DSS had earlier warned Sowore and the other defendants to delete the posts or face legal consequences.
