Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) have sparked a heated debate after political commentator Theo Abu called the Igbo apprenticeship system “low-key slavery.” This system is where businessmen open small shops for their apprentices after years of service.

Theo reacted to a viral video showing an apprentice breaking down in tears as his boss gave him a new boutique stocked with clothes.

Many people praised the gesture, but Theo disagreed, saying the reward was not enough for years of hard work.

He argued that giving a small shop after about eight years of service is unfair. According to him, the shop, including rent and stock, may not even be worth ₦5 million in today’s economy.

He insisted that apprentices deserve better compensation and recognition for their long years of dedication.

Theo suggested that a proper system should be created to clearly define what apprentices will receive at the end of their service.

He said the “Nwa Boy” apprenticeship model needs urgent reform so that young men are not underpaid or taken for granted.
