Kenneth Okonkwo Leaves Labour Party and Parts Ways with Peter Obi

Kenneth Okonkwo, former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s presidential campaign, has left the party and distanced himself from its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi. In his social media statement, titled “Political Journey to a Great Nigeria,” Okonkwo expressed disappointment over the party’s internal issues and Obi’s failure to address them.

Okonkwo emphasized his commitment to a Nigeria built on equity, justice, and fairness, but criticized the current political parties, including the Labour Party, for lacking the ability to lead the country effectively.

He stated, “I am committed, irreversibly, to a great Nigeria built on equity, justice, and fairness, where every citizen will be free and able to aspire to any position or level in life without regard to primordial sentiments built around ethnicity, religion, sex, or circumstances of birth.”

Okonkwo criticized both the APC and PDP, saying they don’t have what it takes to lead Nigeria to greatness. He emphasized the need for a strong political party with grassroots support to challenge corrupt leaders, as well as a decisive leader with integrity and bravery.

Reflecting on the 2023 elections, Okonkwo expressed skepticism about the judiciary’s ability to deliver democracy due to judicial abuse. He urged Nigerians to vote for the right leader and ensure that person is sworn in, calling for bold leadership to end the current suffering.

Okonkwo explained his departure from the Labour Party, citing a lack of leadership from Peter Obi and internal conflicts within the party. He believed Obi had the potential to build a strong party but failed to provide necessary solutions.

“I received my first shock when he publicly declared that he didn’t promise Nigerians to build a strong Labour Party, but to solve Nigeria’s problems,” Okonkwo said. “I cannot continue with this ambivalence forever.”

He voiced support for the Labour Unions fighting to reclaim the party and expressed his doubts about Obi’s ability to lead effectively. Okonkwo stated that his decision to leave the party is based on principles, not personal reasons, and he remains committed to the Nigerian people’s aspirations for a better Nigeria.
