In a groundbreaking move, President Cyril Ramaphosa has named Mandisa Maya as South Africa’s new Chief Justice, making her the first woman to hold the position. Maya, who is currently the Deputy Chief Justice, will officially start her new role on September 1.

Vincent Magwenya, the President’s spokesperson, shared that this decision followed necessary consultations with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and leaders from political parties in the National Assembly, as required by South African law.

The JSC confirmed Maya’s suitability for the role after interviewing her on May 21. They highlighted her impressive qualifications, judicial experience, leadership skills, and her previous role as head of the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Magwenya noted that Maya’s appointment is a historic achievement for South Africa, as she will be the first woman to serve as Chief Justice. President Ramaphosa has expressed his confidence in Maya’s ability to lead and inspire the judiciary.
